Letter From Ralph Cook, President of the Alabama Trial Lawyer's
Association

Members,
Skip Tucker's latest assault on our profession has been distributed
on the listserv earlier today.
We should keep in mind when liars, cheaters and stealers get caught
for their crimes, what do they do? They continue to lie, cheat and
steal, but find other people to do their dirty work. What do oil
companies do when they have been found guilty of cheating the state
out of billions of dollars by two Alabama juries? They consider
groups like Skip Tucker's as a good
investment to publicly justify court decisions that protect their
interests.
Let us all remember that Tucker is a mouthpiece for these corporate
interests that face punishment for their wrong doings in our courts.
They
use him to spread disinformation campaigns with the goal of distracting
us
from achieving our goals of protecting the civil justice system.
We should
not stoop to the level of Mr. Tucker and engage in petty name calling.
What Tucker is trying to accomplish with this letter is to bait
our Association and its members to use our time and resources to
engage in a public battle based on his lies. I will not allow our
resources to be wasted in this way and will direct the Association
to continue its efforts
to explain the truth about who we are and what we represent.
I assure you that ATLA does not take these attacks lightly and an
overall public relations campaign is underway. This effort is not
one that is accomplished quickly or easily. The other side has spent
millions of dollars over the past few decades unfairly labeling
our profession. ATLA understands the need to respond, but we will
not use our resources for ineffective, hit and run type campaigns.
I, like you, am infuriated with the continuous venom from the ACJRC
and AVALA. I am asking you to continue to fight the battle on the
high ground. Continue to explain the truth to your neighbors, Sunday
school classmates, friends and elected officials. In the long run
I know we will be successful with your support.
